A traditional pattern in contrasting light and dark colors. The use of solid colors in quilting has been a signature of the Amish and Old Order Mennonite communities of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania since the 1800’s.

At the bottom border, the quilter has stitched her initials and the year this piece was made.

About This Pattern:

Specific to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, this pattern is also known as Trip Around the World to the Mennonite community, and Sunshine & Shadows to the Amish community. It is made by sewing together hundreds of tiny squares in rows of contrasting colors to form diamond shapes. The rows resemble the rows of crops in their farm fields.
