Created by Lancaster County Mennonite quilter Mabel B., this striking Susquehanna Compass quilt combines traditional patchwork with bold compass medallions that draw the eye across the entire design. The quilt features a soft rainbow progression of fabrics, moving from warm browns and tans through greens, blues, and rich navy tones. Large and small Mariner’s Compass blocks are carefully placed throughout the quilt, creating a sense of movement and exploration while maintaining a balanced, harmonious appearance.
The background is composed of hundreds of individually pieced squares and chain blocks in an impressive range of coordinating prints. Floral fabrics, calicos, tone-on-tone prints, and classic country fabrics blend together to create a colorful spectrum effect. The carefully arranged color transitions give the quilt depth and visual interest while allowing the compass motifs to become the focal point of the design.
